10 reasons to go to our Water Sports Camp!

Water Sports Camps (starts: jun24th-27th, july 8th -11th, july 22nd- 25th, aug 5th -8th, aug 26th -29th)

“It’s a great way to learn new water sports and all of the instructors are very helpful and patient! I’ve learned so many new sports at bow camp! It’s a fun atmosphere and a great place to try something new. Also the lake is awesome and I can’t think of a better way to spend my summer!”

-Allie Moodie, 13 years old Sammamish, WA

Today’s blog is interviewing 12 year old Mikey about why he wants to come back to Bow Lake’s water sports camp?

Interviewer: Justin Huerter Lake Manager

Participant: Mikey 12 year old

“MIKEY tell me your top 10 reasons why you want to go to Bow Lake’s water sports camp!”

Wake boarding, water skiing , unbelievable food, wake skate battles, out do…….

“Hold on Mikey, slow down. Why don’t you tell us about your experience and what you liked the most during your time at camp in a little more detail so that everyone can hear about how much fun it was!!!”

1) Well First off it’s just a great time and I get to meet so many new people who I still chat with on Face Book, Twitter, watch there YouTube videos,  and just hang out with them and do other cool stuff …or just text!!!

“Nice wh…..”

2) Oh and most importantly though, I learned how to do a bunch of new stuff out on the water like how to wakeboard, water ski, bare foot, wake skate, surf, and hit the ski jump at Bow Lake all in one week. Check out this picture of my friend bare footing!!!

“Alright cool pic, Nice job Trista!!!”

3) UMMMM, I also got to get away from home for a little bit and the regular routines, chores, and responsibilities that my parents make me do daily to get allowance!!!

4) We also got to play a ton of fun games in and out of the water; wake skate battles, dodge ball and basketball in the gym, frisbee golf, riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline and…

“What else Mikey?”

Oh ya and we got to wake surf under the lights at Bow Lake check out this picture of Shelby night surfing!!!!

“Ya I remember that night! You guys were all listening to Justin Bieber! All of you guys got up and learned how to surf at night and even under the stadium lights.”

5) We also did some other cool stuff at night like watching wakeboard videos outside on an outdoor projector, hanging out by the bon fire, listening to the instructors stories and eating s’mores. We even went to the bowling alley and then had ice cream afterward. Check out our group picture I took.

“Ya that was a fun night man, I remember being on fire!!!” “Mikey, what about the accommodations you stayed in and the food?”

6) The food was AMAZING!!!! Sue always had everything prepared and set out for us when it was time to eat! My favorite meal was the lasagna she made, WOW!!!

7) The sleeping arrangements we even nicer than my room at home! We were separated from the girls at night, but I got to hang out with all the guys and just talk about guy stuff. Just the regular guy stuff… stuff that yoga girls like this wouldn’t understand!

“Ha you’ll have to fill me in what you 12 year old guys talk about! And these girls were all very talented yoga masters. How about the staff though did you like them?”

8) Yeah they were awesome! I learned tons of stuff from them. Everything from learning to getting up, ride switch, mount a wakeboard by myself, bare foot, and to never say SURE when asked if I want to do something! Always say Yes or No!… I’m still trying to understand that Justin.

“Mikey its just like what we talked about, never hesitate and let something pass you up man. Always be firm with your decision and don’t get stuck in between whether you should or shouldn’t take on the next opportunity. Remember though always think out your decision and make sure they are smart and safe decisions. If you’re not comfortable doing something say no! But good I’m glad you liked all of us out at the lake!”

9) Oh!! and the Aussie’s were hilarious! They were so much fun and really helpful. I can’t wait to see Phil again and ask him how to say peanut butter!!!

“Ha, ok Mikey tell me one last reason why you liked camp and why you want to come back and learn some more new tricks on a wakeboard and/or get better at slalom skiing?”

10) Because I Love The Bow Lake Family and Crew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just check out this video Justin and you’ll understand!!

How to: Heelside 540

Above is Travis Smith doing a Heelside 540 out at Bow Lake during our last 5 Dollar Friday!

The Heelside frontside 540 is more difficult then the Toeside frontside 540 because you have to do an additional handle pass across your body to do the last 180.

Prerequisties:
Before trying the Heelside 540 you should be able to do the following things well:
1. Heelside 360 (be able to finish your spin early, or take it big)
2. Heelside 180
3. Be able to ride switch after landing.

Approach the wake with enough speed to clear the wake and pop high, but you don’t want to land out in the flats when first learning this trick. Keep your arms in tight to your body on your approach.

As get to the top of the wake, let go with your front hand as you pop. Try to get a good high pop, and try to travel forward a bit towards the boat as you begin your spin. This will help you make a good handle pass.

Pull the handle hard behind your back, and try to pull it all the way through to your front hip instead of the small of your back. It also helps the style to suck the board up and get a solid grab on the board before passing the handle through.

As you get the handle around and finish the first 360 degrees, you want to pass the handle across the front of your body quickly to your back hand. At this point you should also start thinking about spotting the shore you’re heading towards with your eyes.

After getting the handle in your back hand, pull it to your back hip to do the final 180. Most people have a problem with the last 180 because they look down at their board and fall back towards the wake. Get your head and eyes up towards the horizon or shore, and try to land on your toes edging away from the boat.

And there you have it, the Heelside frontside 540. Hopefully this helps you to land your first one! Come out to Bow Lake soon to try it out and get a little coaching from our crew!
